If you have ever watched Dancing with the Stars, or any other ballroom dancing competition, chances are you have seen Cha Cha Slide dance steps without even realizing it. Peppy and fun, these are often used in competitive partner dance, and are easy and fun to learn!
What is the Cha Cha Slide?
The Cha Cha Slide is a type of line dance that was choreographed by a Chicago DJ called Mr. C. You may also recognize him as simply "Casper". The steps were written originally as part of a workout set for a fitness chain, but have become popular in regular partner dance circles, and are taught regularly at clubs and dance studios. The Cha Cha Slide dance steps are always called out during the dance, but it sometimes helps to know what you are doing before you have to try it in action. The step by step breakdown below can help you get started at sliding your way to some slick dance moves.
Cha Cha Slide Dance Steps
The song is traditionally broken down into different segments, as a "caller" lets the dancers know what is coming up next.
Take it to the Left, Take it Back Now
This is the beginning of the Cha Cha Slide, as the caller calls out "take it to the left" (or right). Step out to the direction specified, and then cross with your other foot. Step out with the original foot again, and then cross the opposing foot behind. Step out the original foot one last time, and then bring the other foot next to it to "touch". This is also known as a grapevine. Keep on going in this manner until the next step is called. This repeats in all directions, (front, side, back, side), and then the dance moves on.
One, Two, Three, Hop This Time
Jump forward with your feet together as many times as the caller specifies.
Right Foot Stomp
Stomp your right foot (or left) as the caller instructs.
Cha Cha
Cross your right foot over your left foot and then step back again with the left. Then reverse your feet to go in the other direction. This is known as a "cha cha".
Turn It Out
This is another grapevine, but includes a turn. Turn to your left first, and then to your right, repeating until the caller moves on.
Miscellaneous Steps
You will hear some miscellaneous dance steps as the caller continues. Some will be as simple as clapping hands, and some will be more complex but simple enough to catch on to just through the call and following the lead of Cha Cha Slide veterans dancing all around you. The Cha Cha Slide is a very energetic dance, which makes it perfect for dance clubs and fun nights out on the town. You'll work up a good appetite doing this dance, and the calories burned make it a great fitness routine as well. It continues to grow in popularity as people catch the trend of social dancing thanks to all of the popular competitive dance shows on television.
If you want to learn the steps to this dance, check in with your town's nighttime hot spots to see if they hold lessons or play the official Mr. C song on any evenings. You can also inquire at local dance studios or simply purchase the song yourself and throw your own dance party. Once you learn the dance solidly (which won't take long!), you can teach others and spread the fun.
